Barrel Connectors

Barrel connectors (a.k.a. coaxial power connectors1 or DC power connectors) are cylindrical two-contact connectors commonly used to supply DC power to all sorts of general purpose and specialised electronic devices. They consist of a hollow cylindrical outer contact (sleeve) and a central pin contact. The female side is commonly called a barrel jack and the male side a barrel plug.

Sizes

Barrel connectors are defined by two dimensions: the outer diameter (OD) of the sleeve and the inner diameter (ID) of the central pin. The most common combinations are (sorted by OD, then ID):

Outer Diameter (mm)Inner Diameter (mm)StandardCommon Use
2.350.70EIAJ-01Very small. Older Nokia phones, Bluetooth headsets. Rated 0-3.15 V.
3.51.3-Compact/portable devices, lower voltages and currents.
3.51.35-Common alternative to 3.5/1.3. Canon camera chargers (e.g. CA-570), some Alcatel phones.
4.01.70EIAJ-02Sony PSP charger, some Lenovo adapters. Rated 3.15-6.3 V.
4.751.70EIAJ-03Various portable electronics. Rated 6.3-10.5 V.
5.52.1IEC 60130-10 Type AMost popular barrel connector. Used on many wall adapters, guitar effect pedals, Arduino boards, etc.
5.52.5IEC 60130-10 Type ASimilar to 5.5/2.1 but with a slightly larger pin. Miniware TS100 soldering iron. Defined in the same standard as the 5.5/2.1.
5.53.3EIAJ-04Less common. Some specialised devices. Rated 10.5-13.5 V.
6.02.1IEC 60130-10 Type BLess common variant of the 5.5/2.1 family.
6.33.1IEC 60130-10 Type DLarger, higher-current applications.
6.54.3EIAJ-05Sony laptop computers, scanning radios. Rated 13.5-18 V.
7.45.0-Used on many (e.g. HP, Dell, Asus, Sony) laptop computers. Used on Dyson handheld vacuum cleaners. Some have a third contact, a 1.4mm “smart pin” used for digital communication between laptop and charger for communicating voltage/current capabilities.

The 5.5mm OD / 2.1mm ID is by far the most prevalent in hobby electronics and commercial DC power supplies. 5.5/2.5 is not as common but presumably chosen if slightly higher current capabilities and/or ruggedness is required. The EIAJ standard (EIAJ RC-5320A) defines five plug sizes each associated with a specific voltage range, while IEC 60130-10 defines several types by OD/ID only.1 Many more obscure sizes exist — a comprehensive listing can be found on the Wikipedia coaxial power connector article.1

Polarity

Barrel connectors are not polarised by the physical connector itself, so the polarity convention must be agreed upon between the plug and jack. The two conventions are:

  • Centre positive: The central pin is the positive supply rail, and the outer sleeve is ground. This is by far the most common convention.
  • Centre negative: The outer sleeve is the positive supply rail, and the central pin is ground. Uncommon.

Most wall-wart power adapters and development boards (e.g. Arduino Uno) use centre positive. It is important to verify polarity before connecting a power source to a device, as reversing the polarity can damage or destroy electronics.

Gender

As with most coaxial style connectors, the gender of a barrel connector is determined by the shape of the inner contact.

  • Plug (male): The inner contact is a pin.
  • Jack (female): The inner contact is a socket.

PCB Footprints

Barrel connectors are available in through-hole (THT) and surface-mount (SMT) variants:

  • Through-hole: Provides a robust mechanical connection to the PCB. Common for panel-mount or board-edge mounting.
  • Surface-mount: Lower profile and suitable for automated assembly, but provides less mechanical strain relief.

Current and Voltage Ratings

Typical barrel connectors are rated for:

  • Voltage: 12-24 VDC (some rated up to 48V)1
  • Current: 2-5 A, depending on the contact material and construction34

For higher-current applications (> 5 A), barrel connectors are generally not appropriate and alternatives such as T Plugs, XT30/XT60 connectors or Anderson Powerpole connectors should be considered.

Locking Variants

Standard barrel connectors have no locking mechanism and can be pulled out accidentally. Locking variants are available that add a threaded collar or snap-lock to retain the plug. These are used in industrial or harsh-environment applications where accidental disconnection is unacceptable.

Waterproofing

DC barrel connectors are not generally designed to be waterproof. However, one example of waterproofing I have seen is on a Tapo security camera, in where a silicone washer was provided with the connectors. The washer is slid over the sleeve of the female connector. When they are mated, the washer is compressed between the two connectors, creating a seal as shown below. Presumably this will make a reasonable seal against light rain or mist, but is not designed for submersion.

Barrel To Terminal Block

Barrel to terminal block adapters are available which provide a barrel connector and 2 position terminal block in one connector. These are useful for prototyping and quick one-off projects due to their versatility.
